TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC HISTORY
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of music history nor to determine in advance what such a philosophy must be. A field concerned with musical pasts must remain responsive to practices that differ in archive, geography, period, method, epistemology, cultural position, and public purpose. Its concepts must be precise without pretending to universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both the specificity of historical materials and the structures through which those materials become knowable.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of music history may emerge: philosophies generated through research, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the reality of the past, the status of evidence, the form of historical explanation, the legitimacy of periodisation, the location of agency, or the responsibilities of historiography. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which music history understands itself.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become more accountable for the distinctions already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to remember, what they prevent us from recognising, whose pasts they authorise, and how historical practice might transform the terms of its own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites music historians to undertake it collectively.
