The New Lexicon offers music historians a sustained framework in which to deepen both the conceptual and practical dimensions of their research. Over several months, participants can move beyond the compressed exchange of a conference paper or single workshop and develop questions through presentation, response, revision, and public articulation.
The programme enables participants to clarify concepts implicit in historiographical decisions; advance articles, books, editions, archives, exhibitions, and digital projects through substantive feedback; develop precise languages for historical claims; test methodological propositions within an international community; and encounter diverse approaches and traditions beyond their usual fields.
Participants will also be able to situate their work within wider philosophical, historiographical, technological, institutional, ethical, and political debates. This broader contextualisation is not intended to displace empirical research or specialist knowledge. It enables historians to understand more clearly how their practices participate in, resist, or transform the conditions through which musical pasts are preserved, interpreted, and made public.
The residency may generate new research directions, questions, presentation formats, collaborations, and intellectual relationships. It creates a basis for future publications, lectures, exhibitions, editions, digital resources, and research projects beyond the residency’s formal duration. Its value lies not in delivering a single model of historical truth, but in enabling participants to formulate stronger questions, make more responsible interpretive decisions, and communicate the significance and limits of their claims with greater precision.
